THE BIG IDEA

Don’t optimize for three acronyms. Build one strong discovery foundation.

Traditional search, answer engines and generative AI surfaces are not identical. But small businesses do not need three disconnected optimization programs.

The fundamentals increasingly overlap: make the site accessible, make the business understandable, answer real customer questions, support important claims with evidence and measure whether discovery creates business opportunity.

SEO has accumulated a lot of complexity.

Then AI search arrived and added more terminology: AEO, GEO, LLM optimization, AI visibility.

A small business can easily conclude that it now needs an entirely new marketing discipline.

Usually, that is the wrong place to begin.

Start with what both people and machines need.

A technically accessible site. Clear services. Useful answers. Strong local context. Credible evidence. Consistent business information. And pages built around actual customer intent.

Before you start: identify what growth means

Do not optimize every page and every keyword equally.

Write down the services that matter most, the customers you want more of, the geography you genuinely serve and the business actions that represent a conversion.

We know our highest-priority services.
We know the geographic markets we actually serve.
We know what a valuable conversion is: call, appointment, quote, purchase or another outcome.
We know which customer searches would create meaningful business if we won them.

1. Technical SEO: make the site accessible

Before improving content, make sure search systems can reliably discover and interpret the pages you want indexed.

Important pages are indexable. No accidental noindex rules or other obvious indexing blocks.
Canonical URLs are appropriate.Important pages point to the version you intend search engines to treat as primary.
An XML sitemap exists and reflects the pages you want discovered.
Robots directives are intentional.Do not block important content accidentally.
Broken internal links and obvious crawl problems are addressed.
The site works well on mobile.Important content and actions remain usable on smaller screens.
HTTPS is used consistently.

Do not optimize a page search systems cannot reliably access.

Technical SEO is not glamorous, but everything else depends on the foundation working.

2. Page optimization: make every important page clear

Each important page should have a clear job.

The SEO title clearly reflects the page topic and intent.
The meta description gives a useful reason to choose the result.
The page has one clear primary heading.
The main topic is obvious near the beginning.Do not make readers work through generic marketing copy to discover what the page is about.
Subheadings organize meaningful questions and subtopics.
Images that convey information have useful alternative text where appropriate.
The page links naturally to relevant internal pages.
The next customer action is clear.

A checklist should diagnose, not encourage keyword stuffing

Rules such as “keyword in title” or “keyword near the beginning” can be useful prompts. They should not become instructions to repeat an exact phrase unnaturally.

The page should communicate the subject clearly in the language customers use.

3. Search intent: optimize around the customer question

This is where many small-business SEO programs become too mechanical.

Ranking for a phrase is not valuable simply because the phrase has search volume.

Query type
Example
Likely page
Service
“water heater repair”
Service page
Problem
“water heater leaking from bottom”
Helpful problem/guide page
Local
“water heater repair Princeton”
Relevant service/local page
Decision
“repair or replace water heater”
Comparison/decision content
Branded
Business name + service
Homepage/service/profile
We group queries by customer intent rather than creating one page for every keyword variation.
Every important intent group has a page that should realistically win it.
We can identify high-value queries already close to page one or stronger visibility.
We prioritize growth opportunity rather than vanity rankings.

4. Local visibility: make geography real

For a local business, relevance is not only topical. It is geographic.

Our Google Business Profile accurately reflects the business.
Primary and secondary categories are appropriate.
Important services are represented clearly.
Name, address/service area, phone and core business information are consistent where they matter.
Location/service-area pages exist only where they provide genuine relevance and useful information.
We understand that Maps visibility can vary across the geography we serve.

5. Authority & trust: prove the claims

A website can claim anything about itself. Stronger digital authority comes from evidence.

Important expertise is demonstrated, not merely asserted.
Customer reviews provide current independent evidence.
Case studies, examples or real outcomes support meaningful claims where appropriate.
Author or expert information is clear for content where expertise matters.
Relevant third-party mentions and references accurately reinforce the business's identity or expertise.
Content is updated when facts materially change.

Authority is not a field you fill in.

It is the accumulated evidence that helps a customer or discovery system have confidence in what the business says about itself.

6. AI readiness: make the business understandable

Do not begin by asking, “How do we rank in ChatGPT?”

Begin by asking whether the business is represented clearly enough to be understood across discovery systems.

It is obvious who the business is.
Important services and areas of expertise are explicit.
The site answers real customer questions directly.
Related content forms coherent topic relationships rather than isolated articles.
Important claims have supporting evidence.
Business identity and facts are reasonably consistent across important external surfaces.
Content contains useful specificity rather than generic AI-generated filler.

SEO, AEO and GEO are increasingly connected.

The surfaces differ, but the foundation is converging around accessibility, relevance, clarity, authority and evidence.

7. Structured data: clarify what is already true

Structured data can help machines interpret certain information on a page. It should accurately describe the visible content and the real business.

Organization or appropriate local-business information is represented where relevant.
Article content uses appropriate article markup where applicable.
Breadcrumb structure is represented where appropriate.
Other schema types are used only when they accurately match the page and applicable guidelines.
Structured data is validated after changes.

Schema is clarification, not authority.

Adding markup does not make a weak business an expert or a thin page useful. It helps machines interpret information that is already present and legitimate.

8. Measurement: know what deserves work next

Optimization should not end with a green score.

The useful question is whether search visibility is creating opportunity and where the next improvement should happen.

Google Search Console is connected. We can see queries, pages, impressions, clicks and position trends.
Analytics is connected. We can see what visitors do after arriving.
Important conversion actions are measured.Calls, forms, booking actions or other meaningful outcomes.
We distinguish branded visibility from new-customer discovery.
We identify queries with realistic growth potential.
Reporting tells us which pages and opportunities deserve attention next.

Score your foundation

Use this simple audit to decide where to focus first. The point is prioritization, not chasing a perfect score.

It is knowing: Here are the customer searches that represent growth opportunities, here are the pages that should win them, and here is what you should do next.

The Bizfire perspective: Small businesses should not need separate SEO, AEO and GEO departments to participate in modern discovery. Build a strong technical foundation, organize the site around customer intent, make expertise and local relevance clear, support claims with evidence, use structured information appropriately and measure what creates opportunity. Tools should make that work easier. They should not make the strategy harder to understand.
